5. Grant Extranet App Pool Access to User Profile Service Application

Note:  This step is only needed if A) your extranet is running in a SharePoint Server farm (as opposed to just SharePoint Foundation) with the User Profile Service Application provisioned, and B) you plan to leave your User Profile Service Application connected to your extranet web application.  If this doesn't apply to your configuration, you can proceed to Step 6 - Basic Testing.

If you have SharePoint Server and you have provisioned a User Profile Service Application in your farm:

SharePoint User Profile Service Application

and, you intend to leave the User Profile Service Application "connected" to your extranet web application:

SharePoint Configure Service Application Associations

it is necessary to give administrative permissions for the User Profile Service Application to the IIS App Pool account that is used for your extranet web application:

Extranet web application administrative permissions

SharePoint User Profile Service Application Administrators

SharePoint Administrators for User Profile Service Application

By doing this, you will be allowing ExCM to add User Profile Records for external users as they register or are otherwise given accounts for your extranet.  Without this permission being granted, you extranet users will automatically receive a User Profile Record that is created by SharePoint, but the data in it will be incorrect.  By giving the web application permission to add/change User Profile Records, we can ensure that the data maintained in the User Profile database is correct for external users.

Now proceed to Step 6 - Basic Testing
